The Instrument

Juhan Suits ( Juss ) - Estonian bagpipes, wooden horn, whistle, vocal, jew's harp. She is troubled by cartoon generalisations about "weird folk ladies", but as a Cocker protege she inevitably recalls those female figures of the 60s who captivated the rock imagination and became symbols of the musically esoteric - the reclusive Anne Briggs; Mary Hopkin; jazz harpist Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby, whose cosmic 1968 album Afro-Harping is now a psychedelic classic. Such associations won't do her any harm.

Pyotr Ogotoyev is well-khown yakutian jew's harp player, honoured artist of Russia. Here is some of his improvisations from the album "Play, my khomus". As far as I'm aware, the name jew's harp has been around for a long time and the etymology is obscure. There has never been any anti semitic or otherwise perjorative connotation that I know of, but the instrument is occasionally referred to as jaw harp. Whether this is for pc reasons I don't know, as jaw harp seems to have been around a lot longer than political correctness.
Jew's Harp by Pavel Potkin is an extremely neatly made instrument, and it has everything to fall in love with playing the jew's harp. Jews harps are made in Vietnam, originally by the Hmong. Vietnamese name: dan moi. Google the name and you'll find plenty of information and locations.
In 1976-77, the early years of experimenting I was already known to a certain extent so a young musician couple from Holland found me and bought a couple of the experimental pieces. They were my first clients. In 1978 I was finally invited to a folk art fair here in Kecskemét where my Jew's harps sold out in no more than a couple of hours. This was extremely motivating for me. After that, I had a regular stall at these fairs all around the country so I could sell tens of thousands of Jew's harps that I created myself.
